Understanding your Pride Mobility Scooter’s Charger

September 15, 2023

A mobility scooter battery powers the ride, the charger fuels it. In this guide we’ll explore how a Pride Mobility Scooter’s charger works and the crucial role it plays.

What is an Offboard Charger?

As the name suggest, an offboard charger is separate from the device (in this case your Mobility Scooter) and offers portability and flexibility for charging in different locations, and the ability to charge spare/multiple batteries without having to move the entire scooter.

An offboard charger connects to a standard wall outlet, the charger will take the incoming AC power and then converts it to the DC power needed to charge the mobility scooters battery.

Which Pride Mobility Devices use Offboard Chargers?

Pride Mobility use offboard chargers for all our Power Wheelchairs and Mobility Scooter products. Improved lithium-ion technology allows for smaller lighter batteries and patterned charger units. For instance, the Quest model with its 12 Ah lithium-ion battery option. This advance battery can cover up to 16km on a single charge using a 2.5-amp offboard charger.

Lighter batteries, combined with portable charging units give the user flexibility, portability and adaptability to all lifestyles, living and workspaces.

Do all Offboard Charges share the same specifications?

Battery and charger specifications can vary depending on the specific model of your mobility scooter. Pride Mobility Scooters employ charges with varying amperage ratings, typically ranging from 2 – 8 amps.

Amperage measures the rate energy is delivered to the device; a higher amp rating means more electricity can flow through the circuit.

Steps in using your off-board charger:

1. Position Your Scooter

Place your mobility scooter near a standard electrical outlet and ensure it’s powered off before proceeding.

2. Connect the Off-Board Charger

Insert the off-board charger's plug into the charger port on your scooter, and then plug the charger into the wall outlet. If your mobility scooter has a removable battery pack, you can charge the battery pack separately using the off-board charger without the need to move the entire scooter.

*Charging usually takes between eight to 14 hours. 3. Unplug the Charger

Once the charging is complete, unplug the charger first from the wall outlet and then from the scooter's charging port.
